I began seriously researching reports of living pterosaurs in 2003, when I received home videos of Americans who had been in Papua New Guinea. They talked with natives, asking them questions about a large flying creature; on Umboi Island, it is called "ropen." Late in 2004, I traveled to Umboi Island myself, and interviewed villagers who had seen the ropen. I returned to the United States convinced that this creature, a pterosaur, is alive.
Since my expedition on Umboi Island, in 2004, I have written several nonfiction books and a paper in a peer-reviewed journal of science, on this subject of sightings of modern pterosaurs (AKA "pterodactyls"). My most recent book is Searching for Ropens and Finding God, the third edition of my first book.
